Our new pup, “Bandit”, was out in the front yard last December when we had some very icy conditions here in Central PA. Our lawn was a light snow-covered sheet of ice. He was running full speed when we saw him slip on the ice and his right leg flew out to the side causing him to fall. We helped him back into the house. He was holding his right rear leg up, limping along on three legs, not able to put any weight on his right rear leg at all. We guessed what probably happened to him since we had seen this happen to several of our other dogs in the past. It is an inherited trait in some dogs caused by a weakness in the groove and ligaments of the knee joint. The technical name for it is “patellar luxation”. In layman’s terms this equates to a knee joint that can keep popping out of place.
We called our vet to get an appointment for Bandit as soon as possible. When the vet finished his exam and x-rays, our suspicions were confirmed: Bandit would need surgery to correct the problem mentioned earlier. Fortunately, our vet is also skilled in canine orthopedic surgery.
A week later, December 22, the surgery went well and the vet told us to get Bandit a good glucosamine supplement and start giving it to him immediately. Fortunately, we stock a great product on our “Medicine Shelf” here at Lion Country Supply:
DASAQUIN CHEW TABS (Order Code: DAST)
(The flavor must be OK…Bandit ate them up….no problem!)
I am no biochemist and, even if I were, I would not bore you with all the ingredients in this product and how they interact to help maintain your dog’s joint health. But, especially, in our dog’s case, this product is a great supplement to be given to accelerate recovery after joint surgery. For maintaining joint health or assisting in a quicker joint surgery recovery, this is a great product. Within 3-4 weeks, Bandit was putting weight on his leg and walking normally. I can truthfully say that is a great product because I have tried it and IT WORKS!
